Parkway rail station to open four years early
The Department for Transport and Chiltern Railways have confimed that Aylesbury's new rail station, Parkway, will open on 14 December 2008 - four years ahead of schedule.
Parkway sits at the heart of major development area, Berryfields, just off the A41 heading towards Bicester from Aylesbury. The good news for future residents of Berryfields is that they will be able to use the rail service as soon as they move in. Initially, there will be two trains an hour at peak times and one train an hour at other times. The timetable will be published four weeks before the station opens.
The bus service will be the number 16 which currently runs between Waddesdon, Quainton and Aylesbury, which will divert to Parkway. The bus service will be upgraded as the development expands to become a dedicated park and ride service every ten minutes, which will be free to drivers parking at Parkway.
Work on the Berryfields development will start this summer. Road improvements to the A41 are scheduled to be completed before any of the new homes are finished. Around £10 million of works will be undertaken during the next 12 months, including a new roundabout, a new access road to the station, widening of the A41and a new footbridge over the River Thame. Works on the A41 will be mainly undertaken off-peak hours but some delays are likely for motorists. For more information, click here.
Work begins on new town centre bridge and road
On Monday 21 January, work began on the fourth phase of the public transport hub, namely the cycleway and pedestrian bridge from Friarage Road to Southcourt, and Station Boulevard, a new road link between Great Western Street (bus station) and Station Road. The works are expected to last for about one year.
The new bridge is 280 metres long and will give pedestrians and cyclists a safe route between Southcourt and the town centre. It will be architecturally striking and feature a a 35 metre high mast, contemporary handrails and lighting.
Station Boulevard is a new road that will link the rail station forecourt with the bus station. When complete, it will only be open to buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians. Station Road has, to date, been a through road; this will no longer be the case. Morrisons supermarket has already created a new entrance into its car park to take account of this. Access to Morrisons and Friarscroft long stay car park will be from the western entrance to Station Road only.
Vehicle access to the rail station will be through the Chiltern Railways car park only. The rail station taxi stand is being temporarily moved into the station car park as well. Access to Friars Square multi-storey car park will be from the eastern end of Station Road only.
Buses affected
Silver Rider and Water Rider buses will not stop at the rail station for the duration of the works. Passengers will use the bus station stop instead.
Buckinghamshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by the works. For more information about the transport hub, click here.
